In connection with its annual scientific meeting in New York City, the SCC has planned a “Molecular Biology, Gene Expression for Cosmetic Chemists” course on Dec. 11, 2013 at the New York Hilton. The SCC’s scientific meeting begins the next day.

This course is designed for the cosmetic chemist to help them understand the very basic principles behind molecular biology, specifically selected biological markers, gene expression and relevance to cosmetic science. It will cover the relevance of molecular biology/gene expression for the formulating chemists; very basic principles of molecular biology/gene expression; how genes relate to the skin’s appearance; the language of molecular biology; epigenetics and the relevance to cosmetics; and discussion of relevant scientific papers. In addition, the course will feature a general discussion of new scientific information and the relevance to old FDA Regulations, i.e. Title 21 CFR, the Food Drug and Cosmetic Act and global regulations around the world.

The instructor is Howard Epstein, director of technical services for EMD Chemicals, Philadelphia. He has a Ph.D. in Pharmacognasy from the Union Institute & University in Cincinnati and began his career formulating cosmetics for Estée Lauder, Maybelline, Max Factor, Bausch & Lomb and Kao Brands.
